Website Security Basics Every South African Business Should Know

Dylan Meyer March 12, 2026 5 min read

South Africa ranks among the top countries globally for cyberattack incidents. Small businesses are frequently targeted because attackers assume they have weaker defences. If you have a website, you need to take security seriously.

1. Use HTTPS (SSL Certificate)

An SSL certificate encrypts data between your website and visitors. Without it, browsers show a "Not Secure" warning that drives customers away. Most hosting providers include free SSL via Let's Encrypt. There's no excuse not to have it.

2. Keep Everything Updated

Outdated software is the #1 vulnerability exploited by hackers. This includes your CMS (WordPress, etc.), plugins, themes, and server software. Set up automatic updates where possible, and check manually at least monthly.

3. Use Strong Passwords and 2FA

Weak passwords are an open invitation. Use passwords with at least 12 characters, mixing uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on all admin accounts.

4. Back Up Regularly

If your site gets hacked or crashes, backups are your safety net. Set up automated daily backups and store them in a separate location (not on the same server). Test your backups periodically to make sure they actually work.

5. Limit Admin Access

Only give admin access to people who absolutely need it. Use role-based permissions and remove access for former employees or contractors immediately. Every admin account is a potential entry point for attackers.

6. Monitor for Threats

Use security monitoring tools to detect unusual activity — login attempts from strange locations, file changes, or traffic spikes. Early detection can prevent a small breach from becoming a catastrophe.
